Angels Manifest in the Midst of Persecution

Kelvin McDaniel is a minister we have supported in the area of missions and worldwide outreach. He has ministered on several occasions in Indonesia, the world’s largest Muslim majority nation. Years ago on a Sunday, Kelvin preached outdoors in a village full of radicalized Muslims, using a PA system. He preached only that night, but returned two weeks later.

The pastor of a church there met Kelvin and told him that when he had preached, the people did not like it, and the next morning, two very angry men came in a truck with barrels in the back and began pouring gasoline onto the ground of the church. The pastor said, “My wife and I knelt down in the mud and gasoline, and she cried out to God to prevent them from burning the church down. Several church members living close by gathered and also began crying out to God.”

The pastor then said that at that moment, one of the men tried to light a match, but it wouldn’t catch. He continued many times with no success. As the people prayed, the pastor tried to talk the man into not burning down the church. Suddenly, the man looked up, shrieked loudly, turned suddenly, and ran away screaming. Two young church members chased him, tackled him, and held him to the ground as he screamed, “Don’t let him kill me! Don’t let him kill me!”

The pastor told Kelvin, “I couldn’t figure out what he was talking about. The man looked like he was fighting for his life. I yelled and said, ‘No one is going to kill you,’ but the man kept screaming, ‘He’s going to kill me! He’s going to kill me!’ I asked him, ‘Who is going to kill you?’ And he said, ‘The angel!’”

The pastor later learned that when the man tried unsuccessfully to light the last match, he looked up at the church and an angel appeared to him. This angel called his name and said, “I am the angel of the Most High God, the one living God, the God of the Bible that this man is preaching. This is God’s property and you are trying to burn down holy land. Your life is in danger for being here. Because your heart is not fixed on God, you will die this night if you touch this property.”

This man was running for his life. As he was lying on the ground, he began repenting and saying, “I believe. I believe!” About thirty minutes passed before the man was able to get up from the ground. The pastor told him about Christ and the man gave his heart to the Lord.

Kelvin was scheduled to leave Indonesia the following morning. After arriving at the airport, his Indonesian driver received a phone call from the pastor in the village, who asked for him. After taking the phone, the pastor said, “McDaniel! McDaniel! I want you to hear something before you leave. Can you hear this?”
